Community: a group of people living in the same place or having a particular characteristic in common
Place: a particular position or point in space
My time spent at Waipiʻo, Hawaiʻi was a truly magical experience. I felt very connected to the land, and all the hard work was worth seeing the life we brought back to the valley and the families below us too. The caretaker that we met, I found out, was actually my cousin. My sister and I were amazed at that we had found family on Hawaiʻi. The story is kind of funny though because our great great grandfather, John Luaehu, actually had two families: one in Waipiʻo, and one on Maui (If you look at the picture above you can see Maui in the right corner right behind the cloud. The ride down into the valley was pretty scary. There was only a small space to drive down and the angle was almost ninety degrees. When we got to the loʻi area I was confused because all of the patches were dry. After pulling rocks from the stream and dumping it nicely into piles, while the others picked the alien species out of the loʻi. It was finally time for the best part. To give the life back to the whole valley by letting the water flow, some people had to place rocks to divert the water from the stream, others had to give rocks up from the path to the ʻauwai. It was a truly memorable and hard working day that I will never forget.
